Milford Sound,Te Anau and Doubtful Sound

Our day cruise in Milford Sound saw us mainly in the mist and then rain but it was worth the trek to catch a glimpse of Mitre Peak!

We enjoyed some "R and R" in Te Anau,a  little  staging post town overlooking lake Te Anau plus catching up on the laundry etc. but we fitted in a bike ride round the lake and a visit to a bird sanctuary to spot some takahe together with a boat ride to the "Glow Worm Cave " a rather touristy but fun visit to a caving system with a plentiful supply of glow worms (they eat sand flies!) that you see above you like twinkling stars in the dark as you drift along underground in a small boat.

Great dinner but prophetic sky!
Then, off in the bus, boat in the sun and wind across lovely Lake Manapouri and a second bus to Doubtful Sound and a overnight stay on a rather luxurious little cruise ship. Yes, incredibly impressive scenery although sadly, the weather gods were again against us for much of the cruise particularly on the second day. Though we were roused by the captain at about 6am to rush out in our PJs and cagoule to see some dolphins.

One of an abundance of rainbows seen in South Island!
